Border Collies & German Spitz (Mittel)
Let us help you find the perfect addition for your family
At Leveisha Kennels our goal is to produce well rounded family dogs with great temperament, intelligence, good health and good looks. Our focus is to produce good quality dogs rather than a continuous output of puppies. We are breeders of the Border Collie and German Spitz (Mittel) breeds.
Our breeding programme focuses on creating well-rounded dogs with great temperaments, intelligence, good health as well as good looks. We have invested thousands of dollars and countless hours in working to better the Border Collie and German Spitz (Mittel) breeds, in New Zealand. We have built relationships with international breeders all over the world to work towards expanding the gene pool in both breeds. Our overall goal is to create the perfect family dog for all types of lifestyles.
Border Collies have a lot misconceptions regarding their needs. When people think of Border Collies, they generally think about how active they are and their need to work. For most people, this is too much of a commitment so they look towards other, more low maintainance, breeds. Border Collies are working dogs which means they need someone to take charge and teach them what their expectations are. Work doesn’t have to be exercise or stimulating activities, it can be as simple as providing good structure and management throughout the day, at home.
Border Collie dos:
- Good structure & management
- 30-60 minutes of exercise, per day (as an adult)
- Firm but loving connections
- Socialisation
- Desensitisation to stimuli – birds, flies, cats etc
- Regular grooming – 8-12 weeks
- Regular brushing – 2-3 times a week
Border Collie don’ts:
- Over exercising – can cause over-stimulation (high energy)
- Inconsistency – this can cause them a lot of stress/anxiety
Our Border Collies are intelligent, hard working dogs with good health and good looks. They are indoor dogs, however, cope well with being outside as well. They do not need a lot of space to be happy, as long as there is consistency in their daily structure, they will be very happy chilling out all day. We have worked hard to breed out their ‘strong eye’ which they use for herding, to make them better family dogs. They are highly trainable and with the right family are the perfect companion.
German Spitz (Mittel) are a rare breed in New Zealand, however, in recent years their popularity has sky rocketed. German Spitz (Mittel) are full of personality and character, their antics will always make you laugh and smile. They are big dogs living in a small dog’s bodies. They are highly trainable and are always eager to learn. German Spitz (Mittel) are companion dogs and don’t do so well on their own, they prefer to have company whether it be two or four-legged. The Spitz have big coats so need someone who is committed to brushing them on a regular basis, however, some good news is that their coats are self-cleaning. Therefore, if they get dirty, give them a day or two and the dirt will be gone. Spitz have a high defence drive which causes them to be quite barky, if not shut down at a young age you may have trouble with this the older they get.
German Spitz dos:
- Good structure & management
- Shutting down barking at an early age
- 30-40 minutes of exercise, per day (as an adult)
- Desensitisation & socialisation
- Regular grooming – 8-10 weeks
- Regular brushing – 3-4 times a week
German Spitz don’ts:
- Mollycoddling – can cause separation anxiety & stress
- Inconsistency – can cause them stress
Our German Spitz (Mittel) are incomparable to the current gene pool in NZ. Our Spitz are sought after all over the world from Australia all the way to America. They keep up with the Borders and even boss them around, showing off their big personalities. We have worked hard to bring light to this beautiful, fun loving breed and could not imagine life without them.
When it comes to our breeding programme, we don’t have a constant outsource of puppies available, this is what makes us different to a lot of breeders. Although we don’t breed often, we are confident in saying that when we do breed, it is always for a purpose. When it comes to selling the puppies, we have certain expectations owners need to meet to buy one, this is to ensure all puppies go to suitable homes. When it comes to picking a puppy, we are very much involved in the process. We tend to put the right puppy to the right family, as we generally know which puppies are going to do better in different lifestyles. We have found this has worked wonders as it ensures the puppies are going to the right homes which reassures us that there will be little to no issues.
When our puppies are sold, we provide puppy packs with all your puppy essentials, from food samples to a written training programme. We have an open book policy when it comes to communication to reassure our new puppy owners that if there are any issues, we are always there to help. On the rare occasion a puppy doesn’t work out, we will take the puppy back and find it a new home that it will be better suited to. Our dogs are a big part of our family and we wouldn’t be where we are now without them.
If you would like to know more about our breeding programmes, upcoming litters, or either of our breeds. Please feel free to enquire or contact us and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
